Balancing
Social Vision with Business Vision
Hi-Tech Carbon (HTC), a Unit of Aditya Birla Nuvo Ltd, is socially
responsible towards caring of the nearby community in
and around Gummidipoondi, through its Jan Seva Trust.
The Jan Seva Trust has adopted nine villages and is working
for the betterment of a population of 29,622 people. The
key focus areas on CSR initiatives include Education and
Capacity Building, Health and Hygiene, Sustainable Livelihood
and Women Empowerment, Agriculture and Watershed Management,
Infrastructure Development and Social Causes.
Education
- Local Panchayat school students supported
through Merit and Needy Student Scholarships annually.
- Dropout students identified and brought
back to schools with the support of parents and teachers.
- Nine Government schools provided with
Safe Drinking water purifier machines in association with the International Society for Human Consciousness
through Guru Raghavendra, benefitting 5600 students.
- Digital Literacy programme
in association with the Rotary Club of Gummidipoondi
Industrial City, for village school students and Self
Help Group (SHG) Members, at three centres, with computers
being provided by Rotary Internal District 3230.
- Certificates issued to 65 students, following completion of Library building course, a 20-hour learning course of Microsoft
office programme in English / Tamil.
Health and Hygiene
- Free treatment for villagers through the Community Health Centre, run by
the Trust.
- Health Camps comprising activities such as Cancer Awareness
and Screening, AIDS awareness programmes and
Administration of Pulse Polio drops for children and calcium and
iron tablets for women.
- Sanitary napkin vending machines
installed at Government Girls school in and around Gummidipoondi,
benefitting 4750 students.
Sustainable Livelihood and Women Empowerment

- The 2010-11 Women Economic Empowerment
Project by the Jan Seva Trust, in collaboration with
NABARD, was taken up with a budget of 12.10 lakhs, benefitting 30 Activity Based Groups (ABGs).
- Each ABG consisting of five members,
involved in activities like tailoring, embroidery,
paper cover making and floriculture, were formed and
training provided to members. Production centres were
made and marketing linkages were given for sustainability.
- For the upliftment of below poverty
line families, the Trust provided training in tailoring
for women for six months. After completion of the
course, certificate and sewing machines were given
to beneficiaries on 50 per cent costs. So far, 165
women were trained and have started earning Rs.2000
per month through export garment companies, tailoring
shops and also through self employment.
- Income generation activities and training
programmes including Palm leaf weaving for the benefit
of Women SHG Members were conducted.
- Support extended to 28 SHGs and Two
Panchayat Level Federations.
Agriculture & Animal Husbandry
- The Trust has formed 10 farmer's club,
registered with NABARD, Chennai regional office.
- Farmers are given training on Azola
and vermi compositing to promote organic farming and
are also taken for a visit to the Government Farm House.
- Helped farmers in opening their bank
account in corporation bank, for easy access to agriculture
loans from NABARD.
- Veterinary Camp is conducted
every year in collaboration with TN Government, at Panchayat for
the benefit of livestock.
- Awareness programmes are carried out regarding
cattle diseases' Prevention and Control and modern
ways of animal rearing.
Infrastructure Development
- The Trust works towards providing better
infrastructure facilities such as Rural Housing, Individual
House Hold Latrine (IHHL), Bus Stand, Community Centre
and Drinking Water Facility.
- With the active participation of SHGs,
Trust has supported 45 IHHLs in villages during 2010-11.
- Supported 305 IHHL construction in
three villages, for which our Panchayats were awarded
with "Nirmal Gram Puraskar" award by the
Government of India in 2007 and 2008.
Social Causes
- Conducted awareness programmes for
women regarding their legal rights on property, domestic
violence, dowry harassment and health issues.
- Booklets and women development
magazines were donated to women through the village
library.
