On February 27, 2023, Birla Carbon India’s Gummidipoondi plant (BCG), organized a special CSR event where, in the presence of Mr. Sanjeev Sood, Chief Manufacturing Officer, Asia, and Mr. Jibanananda Jena, Unit Head, Birla Carbon Gummidipoondi, the unit celebrated some of its CSR initiatives with the local communities. Speaking about this event, Mr. Sanjeev Sood, said, “It is our pleasure to help the communities in which we serve and live our purpose to share the strength. Be it in the form of providing infrastructure support or medical care for the people, Birla Carbon is strongly committed to uplifting the communities and the villages, where it serves.” He further added while addressing the children, “You are the future of this country, and we hope you grow up to become responsible citizens. This gesture from our end is a small contribution to their overall development.”

​​​​​​​Some of the initiatives include –

Construction of a school building (2 classrooms) and a compound wall – BCG collaborated with the Tamil Nadu Government, under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) self-sufficiency scheme, to construct two additional classrooms and a compound wall at the Guruvattucherry Panchayat Union Middle School. The existing building was in a dilapidated condition and the classrooms were insufficient for 154 children (both boys and girls). ​​​​​​​In addition to this, BCG also sponsored a smart class for the new classroom to enable children to learn faster through audio and video modes of teaching and learning, thus helping them acquire adequate computer skills for their academic development. The smart class has had a tremendous impact towards their learning and communication skills. The absentee rate of the students has also reduced in all the schools as they now actively participate in the smart classroom sessions.

Strengthening the government hospital of Gummidipoondi with medical equipment – BCG has always been keen on strengthening the nearby primary health centres and government hospitals with adequate medical equipment and infrastructure projects, to uplift and get them on par with the private hospitals. As requested by the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), BCG sponsored ENT and dental surgery equipment to the government hospital for the effective functioning in ENT and dental treatments. Recently, BCG also supported the government hospital, in collaboration with National Health Mission, to set up a dialysis centre at the Gummidipoondi government hospital. Prior to this, the locals would travel all the way to the Chennai government hospital (this took a complete day of travel and to complete the procedure). Currently, the government hospital has four dialysis machines and BCG has supported this project with additional medical equipment and a 125KV Generator for continuous processing.

Orientation and Career Guidance Program – Orientation and career guidance plays a vital role for students of standard 10 and 12. Keeping this in mind, BCG organizes every year, an Orientation and Career Guidance Program for these students who come from the nearby government schools to ensure the maximum pass rate in the public exams. This program is organized with the Post Graduate Teachers Association.  BCG sponsors a minimum study material for all children (around 900 students) from four schools. This year, BCG invited the class 10 students from SR Kandigai Govt. High School to receive the minimum study level material which were handed over by Mr. Sood to each one of them.
