International Carbon Black Association Recognizes 13 Birla Carbon Sites with Top Safety Performance Awards

Mumbai, India, and Marietta, USA  – June 5, 2025The International Carbon Black Association (ICBA), which recognizes and celebrates safety achievements within the carbon black industry, has honoured 13 Birla Carbon sites with Gold-level recognition under its Safety Performance Recognition Program, the highest accolade conferred by the association. Among the 13 awarded Birla Carbon locations are 11 manufacturing facilities and 2 R&D Centers spread across North and South America, Europe, and Asia.

John Loudermilk, President and Chief Executive Officer at Birla Carbon, commented, “Safety is a fundamental priority at Birla Carbon – embedded in every process, every policy, and every plant. These recognitions from the ICBA demonstrate a strong safety culture that our teams have established and maintained globally. All our plants maintain the highest safety standards for our employees, which is deeply rooted in our purpose to ‘Share the Strength’. I commend our teams for their commitment and thank the ICBA for encouraging industry-wide excellence.”

The Birla Carbon facilities that won this award are: Marietta and Taloja Technical Centers, Camaçari, Cubatão, Egypt, Gummidipoondi, Hickok, Hungary, Italy, Jining, Renukoot, Spain, and Thailand.

The ICBA’s Safety Performance Recognition Program confers awards in three categories – Bronze, Silver, and Gold – based on progressively stringent safety benchmarks. These awards recognize outstanding safety achievements within the carbon black industry and highlight facilities that exceed expectations in safeguarding their workforce and fostering a culture of safety.

  • Bronze Awards are given to sites that achieved zero Lost Work Day (LWD) cases for their employees during the calendar year of 2024. An LWD case is a work-related injury or illness resulting in one or more lost workdays for the employee following the day of the injury
  • Silver Awards recognize sites that met the requirements of the Bronze Awards or demonstrate greater than 50% improvement from the previous year; and achieved zero medical aid or OSHA recordable incidents or greater than 50% improvement from the previous year; zero fires or property damage incidents with an impact greater than $100K; and zero regulatory citations for safety-related events, audits, or activities
  • Gold Awards were presented to sites that met the criteria for Silver Awards and received an external safety or environmental management system certification recognition, such as ISO 45001, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001, OSHA VPP, or equivalent 3rd party MGMT System certification recognition; or implemented a company-specific safety management system and achieved more than three years with a zero LWD case at the facility

Beyond individual recognition, the ICBA Safety Awards play a critical role in elevating industry standards. By encouraging companies to submit verified safety data and rewarding those that lead by example, the awards program promotes a collective push toward continuous improvement, regulatory compliance, and industry-wide accountability, ultimately contributing to a safer and more resilient carbon black ecosystem.

This is the most awards, both gold and in total, for any of the six member companies of the ICBA.

This milestone reinforces Birla Carbon’s broader sustainability commitment and its ongoing focus on operational excellence, employee well-being, and responsible industry leadership.
