Initiating a Skills Training Center for the Local Communities

With the premise that ‘workforce development is critical to the economic development of the region and sustainability of the business,’ Birla Carbon Gummidipoondi – in collaboration with the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) – embarked upon an ambitious mission towards uplifting the marginalized and unemployed youth of the region through Kaushalya – The Skills Training Centre.

The Hi-Tech Carbon Jan Seva Trust in collaboration with the CII and LaborNet, established the skills training center at Gummidipoondi to provide livelihood skills in trades like – fitter, mobile repairing, electrical repairs, welding, beautician and related services, automobile repairing, data entry operation and debt recovery management, all for the unemployed youth of the area.

The centre has state-of-the-art facilities, training aids, master trainers, and modern equipment to provide training. The centre provides theoretical as well as practical training and simulation in the related courses. A unique feature of this programme is job placement assistance. The center provides complete assistance for job placements and ensures 70% industry placement and 30% entrepreneurial assignment with proper counselling by experts. The programme has certified 2,731 students and offered placements to 1,847 youths during the last seven years and has a stellar record of 77% placements overall.

The scheme has become very popular among the rural youth and is helping them to earn their livelihood and significantly contribute towards the economic and social upliftment of the region.
